Private label shisha charcoal: launch your brand from an Indonesian factory

By Mohamad Sinno, Charcoal Expert ·

Factory frontage
Coconut shell charcoal briquettes for export are produced at a single site in Gunung Sindur, Bogor, West Java. Factory-direct supply means the production floor and the export desk sit at the same address.

What our private-label programme covers

We make coconut shell charcoal briquettes in Gunung Sindur, Bogor, and export them under your brand. The minimum is one container with two tonnes per design inside it; you can brand the inner box and the master carton; the print surcharge, the plates and the design work are already inside the quoted price. Print adds two weeks to a first order and nothing to a reorder.

This is one of two ways to buy from the factory. The other is our box, and the wholesale hub sets the two side by side — same charcoal, same minimum, a different decision about whose name is on it.

The question The short answer What decides it
What is the minimum? 1 × FCL (20 ft or 40 ft), and within it minimum 2 tonnes per shape, size and packaging variant. The per-SKU floor is the one that decides a lineup, because it counts shape, size and packaging variant separately rather than counting logos.
What can you brand? Inner boxes at 1 kg, 500 g and 250 g, and the master carton. 1 kg inner duplex 250 gsm E-flute, varnished, CMYK. 10 kg master kraft K150/M125K150 B-flute, up to 3 colours. Other inner formats on request.
What does branding add? Nothing at the price line. The print surcharge is inside the quoted price, plates and setup for a new design are included, and the packaging design work is free with an order.
How long does print take? 2 weeks for a new design · 10 working days for one printed before · none for a house design. Print runs alongside production rather than after it, so a first branded order is the longer of the two clocks and not their sum.
Who protects the brand? An NDA before any artwork moves, and a registration that is yours. The NDA template has been through external legal review and is available on request. What paper reaches and what it does not is a longer answer than a table row.

Every figure in that table is ours rather than a market average, and each has a page behind it. The brandable formats, with their dielines and print checks, are set out in OEM packaging: formats, dielines and print quality. One thing worth saying plainly at the top, because it is the question most brand owners arrive with: we are the exporter of record and the production site is ours — the charcoal is made at Gunung Sindur and shipped by the company whose registration number is published on this site. You are not buying through a trading desk that sources somewhere else.

From brief to first container

A first branded order has two clocks and they run at the same time. Production is 15 working days (20 ft) · 20 working days (40 ft). Print is 2 weeks for a new design. Add them together and you get a date six weeks out that nobody here recognises; run them side by side and the honest answer is the longer of the two. On a first order that is the print, which is why it is the stage to start rather than the stage to chase.

Extruder press
The die at the press determines the shape a briquette will hold — cube, cube with a centre hole, hexagonal, stix, octagonal, flat, dome or lotus — and every downstream size in the range is set here.

Before either clock starts there is a sample. It is free, 1–10 kg, dispatched within 2 working days with the batch COA in the box, and the freight is on you. Nothing about a packaging conversation is worth having before you have burned the product, because every stage after that point is about putting a box around something you have already accepted. The full OEM process — NDA, artwork, sampling, production, IP walks all nine stages with the clock on each.

There is a third route that removes the print clock entirely. We hold three house retail designs in stock — Coco Reina, Coco Lux, Coco Fire — plus a plain unbranded box, in 1 kg and 500 g, in cube 25 and cube 26, with matching branded master cartons. On a house box the customisation is a side-panel sticker with your company name and contact details, and nothing else on the box changes; on your own design there is no such limit. It is a genuinely different product from private label and we would rather name it than blur the two. Which of the two models fits you is the fork worth settling first.

The launch case

One onboarding, told with the client's permission and without their name. Every line below is the account we were given, and nothing has been added to round it out.

The buyer
A European brand; the name is withheld by agreement
The first order
One 40 ft container, on the buyer’s own packaging design
Before any artwork moved
An NDA was signed before any artwork was exchanged
The design cycle
More than three proof rounds, driven by text, languages and the warning panel — not by colour and not by box structure
First contact to departure
Under two months from first contact to the container leaving Indonesia, design cycle included
Since then
Still ordering; reorders print from plates on file

The part worth knowing is where the time actually went. The proof rounds were driven by text, languages and the warning panel — not by colour and not by the structure of the box. That is the pattern we see most often and the one buyers budget for least, because a design brief tends to describe how a box should look rather than what it is required to say — and what it is required to say depends on the country it lands in. The dieline and artwork page sets out what actually goes on the panels.

The country, and the SKUs, shapes and formats ordered, are not recorded, and the brand's name is withheld by agreement. A case study that invents its own specifics to look complete is worth less than one with gaps you can see.

Costs, honestly framed

Branding does not add a line to our price. The print surcharge sits inside the quoted rate, plates and setup for a new design are included with no separate charge, the design work is free with an order, and so are the samples. The line that does move is the box itself against shipping in bulk — a real number, the same on every grade in our grid, and one we publish rather than quote on request. What branding adds per box and per container works it through, and how many designs fit in one container turns the per-SKU minimum into a lineup.

Inner box packing
Shisha charcoal is packed in small inner boxes inside a master carton, so the unit a retailer sells and the unit a shipper counts are two different things.

What we do not publish is a margin band for your channel. What a distributor, a lounge or an online store makes on a box depends on a landed cost we do not control and a shelf price we never see, and a number typed here would be a guess wearing the clothes of a fact. The inputs are all on this site; the arithmetic is yours. For people starting a brand from nothing, rather than moving one, the fuller playbook is starting a hookah charcoal brand.

Export desk at work
A dangerous-goods consignment travels with a document set that has to be right before the booking is accepted, so the paperwork is prepared alongside the cargo rather than after it.

OEM FAQ

What is the minimum order for private label?
1 × FCL (20 ft or 40 ft). Inside that container the minimum is two tonnes per SKU, and a SKU is a shape, a size and a packaging variant — not a logo. Two sizes of the same design are two SKUs, so a container of one design is straightforward and a container of six is arithmetic worth doing before you commission artwork.
Will the factory protect my brand?
An NDA is signed before any artwork changes hands, and our template has come back from external legal review. That is the part we control. The part that binds everyone who never signed anything is a trademark registration in your own market, held in your own name — and no Indonesian filing does that for you. We say what each instrument reaches and what none of them reaches, as practice rather than legal advice.
Who owns the artwork?
You do. You commission it or we design it free with an order, and either way it is your design on your brand. We hold the dielines and, after a first run, the plates — which is a production convenience that makes your reorders faster, not a claim on the artwork itself.
How long does a first branded container take?
Two clocks that overlap. Production is 15 working days (20 ft) · 20 working days (40 ft). Print is two weeks for a new design, ten working days for one printed before, and nothing at all for a house design taken from stock. Because they run together rather than in sequence, the honest answer is the longer of the two, and on a first order that is almost always the print.
Do you give territory exclusivity?
Not as a published term. Exclusivity is a commercial agreement rather than a feature of the programme, and a factory promising it on a first container is promising something it has no way to police. What is real is that your design is yours: we do not sell your box to anyone else, and the three designs we do sell openly are our own house brands, offered as such.

Start with a sample

Ask the export desk for a sample and a dieline pack in the same message. The sample is free, one to ten kilograms, and comes with the batch COA; the dielines let your designer start before anything is committed. If you would rather see a finished box first, we can send one of the house designs instead — it is the fastest way to judge print quality on our board without commissioning artwork.
