Wholesale shisha charcoal pricing and container economics

By Mohamad Sinno, Charcoal Expert · Last updated

A wholesale price for coconut shell charcoal is built from five things, in this order: the ash band you contract to, the packaging, the tonnes your shape actually loads, the incoterm, and the payment route. The grid below prices the first two. The rest of this page is what the other three do to the number.

Master cartons stacked
The master carton is the unit that customs, the carrier and the buyer’s warehouse all count, which is why its dimensions and net weight drive both the packing list and the container plan.

How a quote is built

Step What it decides
Tier The ash ceiling you contract to. It sets the price per tonne and nothing else does.
Packaging Full or bulk. The same charcoal; a different box count and a different price line.
Tonnes Shape decides what a container holds, so shape decides how many tonnes you are buying.
Incoterm Published prices are FOB Tanjung Priok. EXW Factory and CFR are also quoted, and each moves a different cost and a different duty onto a different party.
Payment 50% T/T deposit against the proforma invoice, balance against the B/L copy — to the company account, which is the one you should verify before you send anything.

Price per tonne, by ash band

Five bands, each defined by the ash ceiling we will hold to in the contract. Prices are USD per tonne, basis FOB Tanjung Priok.

Band Ash ceiling Full packaging Bulk packaging
Diamond 1.2–1.6% $1900 $1820
Platinum 1.6–1.9% $1800 $1720
Super Premium 1.9–2.3% $1750 $1670
Premium 2.3–2.5% $1700 $1620
Regular 2.5–3.0% $1650 $1570

Reports measured to date fall within the Diamond band; every tier's ash ceiling is contractual and verified by the batch COA.

What "full" and "bulk" actually mean

The two columns are the same charcoal. They differ in what surrounds it, and that is the whole of the price gap.

Packaging What is in the container
Full 10 kg master kraft K150/M125K150 B-flute, up to 3 colours, holding 1 kg inner duplex 250 gsm E-flute, varnished, CMYK, each lined with a HD 5-micron bag with 1 g silica.
Bulk 10 kg master kraft K150/M125K150 B-flute, up to 3 colours, with the bag or bags inside and no inner box.

Full packaging is retail-ready: the 1 kg inner box is the unit a shop sells. Bulk is for buyers who repack under their own brand, and it is the cheaper line because we are not printing and folding a box you are going to throw away.

Inner box packing
Shisha charcoal is packed in small inner boxes inside a master carton, so the unit a retailer sells and the unit a shipper counts are two different things.

Why the minimum is one container

The minimum order is 1 × FCL (20 ft or 40 ft). That is not a commercial preference, it is what the cargo is: coconut shell charcoal ships as UN 1361, Class 4.2, Packing Group III, a declared dangerous good, and a declared dangerous good moves as a full container load with its own documentation set. There is no part-load route that stays compliant and stays cheap. What a container holds depends on the shape you order — what a 20 ft and a 40 ft actually hold by shape has the payload table.

Inside the container there is a second floor: minimum 2 tonnes per shape, size and packaging variant. A mixed load is welcome — several shapes and sizes in one box is normal — but each line has to be worth pressing and packing as its own run, and below two tonnes it is not.

What moves the price

Within a band, the price on this page does not move — the band is the price. What moves your total is everything the band does not cover: which shape you pick and therefore how many tonnes fit, whether you take full or bulk packaging, which incoterm you buy on, and what the ocean leg costs in the month you book. Ash below a band's ceiling is not a discount and not a surcharge; the ceiling is the promise, and the batch COA is the proof.

A worked example, with the arithmetic shown

A per-tonne price is not a landed cost, and the gap between them is where most first orders go wrong. We publish one container costed line by line, with every input tagged as either a registry figure or an assumption, so you can see which numbers we stand behind and which you must confirm with your own forwarder: what a 20 ft container of shisha charcoal costs, with the arithmetic shown.

Two questions come before that arithmetic. Why the order starts at a full container at all — and what that is in tonnes — is at why the minimum is one container. What actually moves the number per tonne, and the two drivers buyers expect to matter that cost nothing, is at price per ton drivers. And what sits underneath any quoted price — which cost lines a factory has, which of them have a public instrument you can open, and which nobody publishes — is at what a tonne costs to make.

Neutral packaging
Neutral packaging lets a buyer apply their own branding after import, and it is the default where the importer, not the factory, owns the retail brand.

Incoterms, and what each one includes

We quote EXW Factory, FOB Tanjung Priok and CFR. The prices above are FOB Tanjung Priok: the charcoal, cleared for export and loaded on board at the port of loading. Ocean freight, insurance and everything at the far end are yours.

The choice is not only about who pays. Because this cargo is dangerous goods, the incoterm also decides who signs the dangerous-goods declaration — a legal position, not an invoice line, and one worth settling before the contract rather than at the terminal gate: which incoterm makes the buyer the dangerous-goods declarant.

Payment, and the check worth making first

50% T/T deposit against the proforma invoice, then the balance against the B/L copy. Payments only to the company account, whose name is the legal entity name.

That last clause is the one worth reading twice. Supplier-payment fraud in this trade works by substituting an account at the last moment, usually in an email that sounds routine and arrives while a shipment is already moving.

So before you send anything, read the account details off our own site rather than off the invoice in your inbox, and check the two match: verify our account details.

Get a dated quote

Send the shape, size, packaging and destination and you will get a proforma with the figures fixed against your order. If you want to see the material first, samples are free — how samples work and how they ship. The product those figures price, with its shapes and loading math, is laid out on the coconut shell charcoal briquettes page.
