Buyer questions, answered

104 questions, gathered from the pages that answer them ·

Nothing on this page was written for this page. Each answer is the one its own page gives, rendered from the same source, so the index cannot say something the page has since corrected. They are grouped in the order the questions actually arrive.

Quality check before packing
A visual and hand check before packing catches the defects that matter commercially — broken edges, out-of-size pieces and surface dust — none of which a laboratory analysis reports.

What the product is

Order size, grades, production time, samples and the port — the questions that come before anything else.

Answered in full on Coconut shell charcoal briquettes

What is the minimum order quantity?

1 × FCL (20 ft or 40 ft). Within a container you can mix shapes, sizes and packaging formats, so a first order does not have to be a single SKU.

Do you sell grades?

We sell one line in five commercial tiers, and each tier is an ash ceiling written into the contract and evidenced for each shipment by that batch’s COA. What we do not sell is a measured grade: three single-sample lab reports describe one product’s variation rather than three products, so they cannot establish measured bands. The tiers and their per-tonne prices are on the pricing page. If your buyer specifies a tier name, ask which ash ceiling defines it and which report evidences it.

How long does production take?

15 working days (20 ft) · 20 working days (40 ft). That is production time only — it excludes packaging, quality control and vessel booking, so build a buffer into your arrival date.

Can I get a sample before ordering?

Yes, and it is free — you cover the delivery. Because charcoal is UN 1361 Class 4.2 it cannot travel as an ordinary parcel, so samples move as declared dangerous goods or by sea rather than by courier. Plan in weeks, not days.

Which port do you load from?

Jakarta (Tanjung Priok) is the primary port of loading. Semarang is also used, on MSC.

What certifications do you hold?

We do not publish a certification claim we cannot evidence, and we do not publish a registry number we have not checked against the certificate it comes from. Our NIB meets that test and is published, with its issue date, on the documents page; it was corrected against the certificate on 29 August 2026. Ask the export desk for the current document pack and verify that too, rather than taking a badge on a website at face value.

Which shape and size to order

Eight shapes across 26 sizes, what the piece counts mean, and how a container splits between them.

Answered in full on The catalogue · that page last reviewed 11 September 2026

How many shapes and sizes can I actually order?

Eight shapes across 26 sizes, and any size on custom order. Cube runs 22 to 28 mm; the three extrusion profiles — hexagonal, stix and octagonal — share one list of five sizes; flat/brix has two thicknesses; cube-with-hole, dome and lotus have their own.

Why do some sizes show a piece count and others say "on request"?

Because we publish the counts we actually record at packing. Cube is counted for all five sizes and lotus for its one; for the rest the count exists but is not on our data sheet, so the desk gives it rather than this page guessing it.

Is the piece count a guarantee?

No — it is a nominal packing count. It moves with density and moisture on the day the boxes are filled. Dimensional tolerance is ±0.3 mm per side.

Does the price change with shape or size?

No. Price follows the grade, which is an ash band, and the packaging — boxed or bulk. Shape and size change how much fits in a container, not the figure per tonne.

What is the smallest order per size?

One full container overall, and two tonnes per shape, size and packaging variant inside it. So you can split a container across several sizes as long as each reaches two tonnes.

Can I mix sizes in one container?

Yes, subject to the two-tonne minimum per variant. Mixing changes the payload: a 20 ft fills by volume, so the densest packing sets the tonnage, while a 40 ft weighs out at 26.5 t whatever the shape.

Hexagonal briquette, macro
The hexagonal section gives a briquette flat faces that sit stable on a grate or in a bowl, which is the practical difference from a round finger of the same dimensions.

Whether it is the right material

Shisha charcoal is not barbecue charcoal and it is not activated carbon. Buyers are told otherwise constantly.

Answered in full on Not BBQ charcoal, not activated carbon · that page last reviewed 24 August 2026

Can BBQ charcoal be used for shisha?

People do it, and the trade generally advises against it, but the useful answer is dimensional rather than a verdict: shisha bowls and heat-management devices are built around briquette dimensions, and barbecue formats are conventionally larger. A piece that does not sit correctly on the device cannot be regulated by the device. Ash behaviour differs between the classes too, and ash is what progressively blocks airflow.

Is coconut shell charcoal the same as coconut shell activated carbon?

No, and they are not even in the same tariff chapter. Both start from coconut shell and both are carbonised, but activated carbon then takes a second processing step whose purpose is pore structure for adsorption. One is a fuel, the other is a filter medium. Chapter 44 of the tariff excludes activated charcoal outright and sends it to heading 3802.

Why does my supplier quote an iodine number?

Because they are quoting an adsorbent specification. Iodine number and surface area measure adsorption capacity, which is meaningless for a fuel briquette — nothing about them predicts how a coal heats a bowl. In the other direction, ash and fixed carbon say little about an adsorbent. If a quotation mixes the two vocabularies, establish which product is actually being offered before anything else.

Do you make BBQ charcoal or activated carbon?

No. We manufacture natural shisha-grade coconut shell briquettes only — no barbecue line, no quick-light products, no activated carbon. We publish measured values for our own product and nothing for classes we do not make.

Whether the numbers can be trusted

What a COA measures, what it does not, and how our figures are arrived at.

Answered in full on Quality and specifications · that page last reviewed 8 August 2026

What ash content should I require for shisha charcoal?

Published supplier bands for coconut shell shisha charcoal generally sit between 2.2% and 2.5% maximum. Our three lab reports measured 1.20%, 1.34% and 1.58%. Specify a maximum you can enforce against a COA rather than a marketing grade name, and require the report that proves it.

Is a supplier's specification sheet the same as a lab report?

No. A specification sheet states the band a factory intends to hold. A certificate of analysis states what an accredited laboratory measured in one named sample on one date, under a named test method. Only the second is evidence.

Why do you not publish a calorific value?

None of our three laboratory reports includes a calorific test, so we have no measured figure to publish. Publishing an unmeasured kcal/kg number would be a claim, not a specification. A bomb-calorimeter test would be needed before we could state one.

What does 'Platinum' or 'Premium' grade actually mean?

Across the market, whatever the seller using the word decides it means — there is no standards body behind it. On this site it is not a grade at all: Platinum names our guaranteed 1.6–1.9% ash band, a ceiling written into the contract and evidenced by each batch's COA. The numbers are the specification; the name is only a label for them. Compare measured numbers and test methods instead of tier names, here as anywhere else.

How long is a certificate of analysis valid?

A COA describes the sample it was drawn from, not every future batch. Treat one as batch-specific and roughly 90 days current, and ask for a report against your own production run rather than relying on a report issued for someone else's.

Ash test setup
Ash content is measured by burning a weighed sample to constant mass in a muffle furnace and weighing the inorganic residue that remains.

Whether the report itself is real

A certificate is easy to produce and hard to check. These are the routes that do not pass back through the seller.

Answered in full on Is that lab report real? · that page last reviewed 7 September 2026

Can I contact the laboratory directly to check a certificate?

Yes, and you should. Give the report number and the issue date and ask whether that report exists and matches what you were sent. The only rule is where you get the contact details from: use the laboratory’s own letterhead or the accreditation register, never a link, QR code or phone number printed on the document you are checking.

What does an accreditation number actually prove?

That the laboratory was assessed as competent for a named scope of tests, on a date, with an expiry. It does not prove that your particular certificate is genuine, and it does not automatically cover every test the laboratory performs — accreditation is granted for named methods, so reading the scope matters more than seeing the number.

Our laboratory is accredited under LP-090-IDN. Does its scope cover coconut shell charcoal?

We do not know, and we are not going to guess. KAN’s public register summarises that laboratory’s scope as "Biji kopi, lada hitam, wood charcoal, activated carbon", which does not name coconut shell charcoal; the full scope document sits behind a login and we have not read it. The question to put to the laboratory in writing is which scope entry covers ASTM D1762-84 and IK.BPL.7.4 for charcoal briquettes.

A supplier sent a certificate with no batch or lot number. Is that a problem?

It is the most common failure and it is fatal to the document’s purpose. A certificate describes the sample it was drawn from. With nothing tying that sample to the goods in your warehouse, a genuine report from a real laboratory still proves nothing about your shipment.

Have you ever published a laboratory reference that was wrong?

Yes. In September 2026 we withdrew a report credited to a second laboratory, along with a fixed-carbon figure quoted on a dry basis, because neither matched any document the company holds. It was caught by the check on this page — somebody asked which held scan the number came from, and there was not one. The correction is written up on our certifications page rather than buried.

Which document proves what

A spec sheet and a certificate of analysis are not two versions of the same page, and only one of them is evidence.

Answered in full on Spec sheet vs COA · that page last reviewed 7 September 2026

What is the difference between a spec sheet and a COA?

A spec sheet states what a product is supposed to be; a certificate of analysis states what one tested sample actually measured, with a date, a method and a report number. The first is a promise written by the seller, the second is evidence written by a laboratory. Only one of them can be checked against the goods you received.

Why do you not publish a typical-values spec sheet?

Because the honest version of it is the measured range from the certificates we hold, and we publish that instead. A typical-values table is a set of numbers with nothing behind them; once you have three numbered reports, printing a rounder, friendlier set of figures beside them adds nothing except the option of quoting the friendlier ones.

The results column on a COA says "Typical". Is that normal?

No. The results column records what was measured on the sample. "Typical", "approx." or a range in that column means the document is a specification wearing a certificate’s layout, and it should be sent back with a request for the measured values and the method used to get them.

Which document do I put in the contract?

The specification defines the ceiling you are buying to, and the COA proves each shipment against it — so the contract names the ceiling and requires a batch certificate for every consignment. A contract that references only a spec sheet has no evidence mechanism, and one that references only a certificate has nothing to measure the next batch against.

Finished goods racking
Finished charcoal is stored under cover and off the floor, because absorbed moisture is carried into the container and turns up later as weight, odour and breakage.

What you can tell by looking

The bench observations buyers actually make, and the difference between one of those and a measurement.

Answered in full on What ash colour tells you · that page last reviewed 7 September 2026

Does whiter ash mean better charcoal?

Not reliably. Pale, fine ash usually means the burn went to completion and the mineral load is low, which is a fair first impression. But the same appearance can come from the soil the palms grew in, and suppliers themselves note that additives can mimic it. Colour is worth looking at and is not worth writing into a contract.

Is ash colour on a certificate of analysis?

No, and not on ours either. A COA measures ash CONTENT as a percentage, to a stated method — on our three certificates that is IK.BPL.7.4 Point 6.3, giving 1.20–1.58%. No laboratory on this market reports ash colour, because no standard defines how it would be measured.

Why does the factory record ash colour if it proves nothing?

Because it moves before a measured number does. Colour is one of four things noted at each of the six sampling stages, alongside weight, ash content and moisture, and it is the one that is somebody’s eye rather than an instrument. As an early warning inside a process it earns its place; as a specification sold to a buyer it does not.

How do I check ash colour myself?

Burn one piece out fully on a clean white dish, on charcoal alone rather than in a bowl — foil, heat-management devices and the bowl all leave residue of their own. Read the texture before the colour: fine powder means the burn finished, black soot or grit means it did not. Then set the observation beside the measured ash figure for the same batch code.

When something is wrong with a batch

Symptom to cause to evidence — and the two things that decide whether a complaint is arguable: the carton code and the window.

Answered in full on Charcoal problems, diagnosed · that page last reviewed 7 September 2026

Is the problem the charcoal or my storage?

Often both, and the way to separate them costs nothing. Open a second carton with a different batch code, and change how you light one of them. If the symptom follows the code, it is a batch question; if it follows the ignition or the room, it is a handling question. Charcoal is hygroscopic and takes up moisture from the air, so a piece that left the factory dry can arrive at a humid warehouse and behave differently.

What is the first thing to do when a batch behaves badly?

Photograph the code printed on the carton, before anything else. Ours is a four-digit batch production code, two letters identifying the packing team, and one check digit. Every question after that one — what the certificate says, what the factory recorded, whether a claim is arguable — depends on being able to name the batch.

What happens at your factory when a check fails?

The batch, or the failing part of it, is rejected and does not ship. We claim no re-drying-and-retest route, because we do not run one. Checks happen at six sampling stages and again per batch, where the file records ash content, moisture, burning time, drop test, cracks and temperature alongside the laboratory certificate.

How long do I have to raise a problem?

Ours is seven days from receipt for quality and quantity claims, after which the goods are deemed accepted; the remedy is replacement or credit on the next order. Whatever your supplier’s window is, find it before the container lands — a finding that arrives after the deadline is a conversation rather than a claim.

Sparking on ignition

The commonest complaint in the category, and the one where a measured number separates a batch fault from a handling one.

Answered in full on Why shisha charcoal sparks · that page last reviewed 7 September 2026

Is sparking always a defect?

No. A few sparks on ignition are normal behaviour, and one of the more careful sources on the subject treats sparking as something to understand rather than as a fault to sell against. What is not normal is vigorous, persistent sparking through a whole carton — that points at moisture, at fines, or at material that should not be in the piece.

Does sparking mean the charcoal is wet?

It is the commonest cause and the trade treats the two as equivalent, but they are not. Fines and dust at the bottom of a carton spark because they have far more surface than mass; grit and unclean fibre behave differently in heat from charcoal; and a blast of air will exaggerate any of it. Moisture is the first thing to check, not the only thing.

How do I check the moisture myself?

A drying oven at 120 °C for five to ten minutes, weighing before and after. That is a quick check rather than the constant-mass method a laboratory uses, and it is enough to compare cartons against each other and against the figure on the batch certificate. Our three certificates measured 1.35–3.06% on the samples they tested.

Do you publish a spark rate per batch?

No, and we would rather say so than produce one. No spark-bench observation is recorded anywhere in what this company holds, and the factory’s own logs are not published. A table of spark counts by batch would be the most persuasive thing on the page and the least checkable.

A chemical or sour smell

Three quite different causes with three different remedies, and the one check we do not yet have.

Answered in full on Chemical or sour smell on ignition · that page last reviewed 7 September 2026

Why does coconut charcoal smell when I first light it?

Usually the binder. Coconut charcoal briquettes are pressed with a starch binder — ours is tapioca at a typical 1.5–3% of the mix — and a natural starch gives off a mild odour as it burns off at first light. Bringing the piece to a full ember before it goes near tobacco is the ordinary remedy.

When is a smell a reason to stop using the batch?

When it is sharp or solvent-like and persists after full ignition. A faint starchy note at first light is the binder; a sour or fermented note points at the mix or the drying; a chemical note that survives a full ember points at something in the formulation, and that is a question about what the binder is rather than about how you lit it.

How should I test for an odour?

Burn one piece alone, away from a bowl. Foil, heat-management devices and the bowl itself each contribute their own smell, and a session is a mixture — if you want to judge the charcoal, remove everything else. Use pieces from a carton whose code you have photographed.

Do you have your own odour check?

Not one that is recorded, and we are not going to borrow somebody else’s. There is no first-party odour check on our data sheet — no stage, no method, no pass criterion. What is recorded is the binder range and sampling at mixing, extrusion and drying, which are the stages where an odour cause acts. When a real check is written down it will appear with its stage and its criterion, dated.

Whether the company can be trusted

What we publish about ourselves, what we withhold, and the questions worth putting to any factory.

Answered in full on Questions to ask a factory · that page last reviewed 10 August 2026

Should I ask a charcoal supplier about their production capacity?

It is the weakest question in common circulation. Capacity cannot be verified from outside, it is the figure suppliers inflate most freely, and it does not answer what a buyer needs to know. Replace it with question 4: a lead time for a named container size is a commitment that can be measured against the date the container actually leaves. We publish no capacity figure ourselves, for the same reason we would not accept one.

Is ISO 9001 the certification to ask a charcoal factory for?

ISO 9001 certifies a management system, not the product, and it is not evidence that a factory exists. The more informative request is an accredited laboratory report carrying a report number and a date, showing ash, fixed carbon, moisture and volatile matter — those are the figures that decide whether a shipment matches the sample that won the order.

What if the supplier refuses a live video call?

A refusal is not automatically disqualifying, but what is offered instead is the whole answer. A scheduled call at a stated time, a walk through an area the buyer names rather than one the supplier chooses, or an independent inspector at the buyer’s cost are all workable substitutes. A refusal with no alternative attached is itself the answer.

Do these questions work on a trading company?

They identify one, which is not the same as rejecting one. A trader who says plainly that they are a trader, names the producer, and gets the dangerous-goods and container answers right from that producer is a workable counterparty, sometimes a better one than a small factory with no export desk. What this page screens for is a trader presenting as a factory, because every later answer inherits that first misstatement.

Whether an offer is what it looks like

The recurring fraud shapes in charcoal sourcing, and the checks that cost nothing.

Answered in full on Charcoal supplier scams · that page last reviewed 5 September 2026

What is the single most useful check before paying a new charcoal supplier?

Compare three strings: the company name on their website, the name on the registration they give you, and the beneficiary name on the payment instruction. They should be the same. The identity-clone and account-redirect patterns both fail this check, and it costs nothing and takes a minute.

Is a very low price on its own evidence of a scam?

No, but it is the question rather than the answer. A quotation far below the market median is the documented entry point for several fraud patterns, and it is also what a genuinely different grade, ash band or carton size looks like. Ask what makes it cheaper, then check the answer against a laboratory report with a number on it.

A supplier sent certificates. Does that settle it?

Only if the certificates can be checked. A report that names its issuing laboratory, its test method and its report number can be confirmed by contacting that laboratory directly, and every real laboratory answers that question about its own reports. A certificate supplied only as an image, with no number and no reachable issuer, is a picture of a certificate.

Why does this page not name any of the companies involved?

Because a pattern is something you can check and an accusation is something you have to take our word for, and we sell charcoal — we are an interested party. Everything described here is a shape, with the tell that identifies it. That is more useful than a list of names, and it does not require you to trust a competitor of the companies on it.

If money has already moved

The order of the first hours, what to keep, and how to tell a fraud from a dispute.

Answered in full on The first 72 hours · that page last reviewed 5 September 2026

How long do I actually have to recall an international wire?

The commonly published window is 24 to 72 hours, and the practical constraint is the receiving bank rather than the clock: once the funds are credited to the beneficiary, recall rates fall sharply. This is why the first call goes to your bank’s fraud department before anything else, including before contacting the supplier.

What should I keep, and is a screenshot enough?

A screenshot is a view, not the record. Ask your bank for the debit advice or transfer confirmation, the beneficiary details, the payment purpose, the SWIFT message, the UETR, the intermediary-bank details, the recall request and every response to it. Export email and chat threads complete and with their headers intact rather than forwarding a selection.

How do I tell a fraud from a supplier who is just handling a problem badly?

By what exists. A real counterparty has a registration that resolves in a public register, a laboratory report whose number the laboratory confirms, a site that can be visited, and a bank account in its own registered name. If those check out you probably have a commercial dispute, which has a claims window and a defined remedy. If none of them does, you are in the other situation.

Should I use a service that offers to recover the money for a fee?

Treat it as the second stage of the same fraud. The United States’ internet crime reporting centre states on its own front page that it works with no non-law-enforcement entity, such as law firms or crypto services, to recuperate lost funds, and that it will never contact you for information or money. A documented variant of this approach resells the identity documents submitted to it.

Whether the container will match the sample

What legitimately moves between a sample and twenty tonnes, and the protections that close the rest of the gap.

Answered in full on Why bulk sometimes differs from the sample · that page last reviewed 5 September 2026

Is a difference between the sample and the bulk always dishonesty?

No, and treating it that way costs buyers good suppliers. A sample is a handful of pieces and a container is twenty tonnes, so some spread is arithmetic rather than intent. What separates honest variance from a substitution is whether the deviation is inside the stated tolerance, whether it traces to a batch with a record behind it, and whether the supplier can produce the certificate for the batch that actually shipped.

What actually changes between a sample and a container?

Moisture is the parameter most likely to move, because it responds to storage, weather and how long the goods sat before stuffing. Dimensions and packing counts drift with press and cutter wear across a long run. Ash and fixed carbon are the most stable, which is why a retained sample can still answer for them years later while a moisture comparison against the same sample cannot.

Can I inspect before the balance payment is due?

That is the arrangement the quality-control trade recommends, and it is worth writing into the contract rather than assuming: a pre-shipment inspection that happens after the balance has moved has no leverage attached to it. A shipment sample drawn a few days before loading is the lighter version of the same idea, and it is a convention buyers can ask for by name.

How do I prove what arrived was not what was approved?

Against the batch code on the cartons, not against a general impression. Each carton carries a printed batch production code, and that code identifies the batch whose file holds the laboratory certificate and the factory results. Photograph the cartons and the code, compare against your sealed counter-sample, and raise it inside the claims window: ours is seven days from receipt, after which the goods are deemed accepted.

How the money moves

The payment structure, what each trigger is evidence of, and the one rule that defeats an account switch.

Answered in full on Contracts and payment · that page last reviewed 5 September 2026

Is a 50 % deposit normal, or is the market at 30 %?

The convention the trade-finance and forwarder guides describe is 30 % before production and 70 % before shipment. Ours is heavier at the front and earlier at the back: half against the proforma invoice, the balance against the bill of lading copy. What matters more than the split is what each trigger is evidence of — a B/L copy exists only once the goods are on a vessel, so the second payment is due against proof the container shipped rather than against a promise that it will.

Do you accept a letter of credit?

It is a question for the proforma stage rather than a policy on a web page, and the honest framing is that the instrument matters less than where the payment stages sit. What the published conventions agree on is a direction rather than a number: one source calls an LC disproportionate below about 25,000 USD, and it and two others put the point where LCs become standard at 50,000 USD and above. A first container falls between those two figures, so the conventions do not settle it.

What stops the money going to the wrong account?

One rule, and it costs nothing to apply: payments only to the company account, whose name is the legal entity name. Ours is published on the contact page with the bank, the SWIFT code and the account number, and the account name matches our registered name character for character. Any email announcing new bank details mid-transaction is fraud — verify by video call with the export desk before paying, never by replying to the email.

What happens if the container is wrong when it arrives?

Quality and quantity claims are raised within 7 days of receipt; after that the goods are deemed accepted. The remedy is replacement or credit on the next order, and compensation beyond that is settled by agreement in a later shipment rather than in cash. Document against the printed batch code on the cartons rather than against a general impression, because that code identifies the batch whose file holds the laboratory certificate and the factory results.

Which payment instrument fits

T/T against a letter of credit at a first container's ticket, with the published thresholds as a band rather than a line.

Answered in full on T/T vs letter of credit · that page last reviewed 5 September 2026

Is a staged telegraphic transfer safe for a first order?

Not by itself — a T/T carries no formal buyer protection, which the forwarder guides state plainly. It becomes reasonable when three conditions hold together: the beneficiary name equals the registered company name you verified in a public register, the balance is due against a document that only exists after shipment rather than against a date, and something checkable happens before that balance moves. Any one of those alone is not enough, and a supplier who resists all three has told you something.

Why would an LC not be the obvious answer?

Because a letter of credit pays on conforming documents rather than on conforming goods, and because its cost does not scale down. The published figures run to roughly 0.5–1.5 % of invoice value, or a flat 500–1,500 USD on each side, against wire fees of about 20–50 USD — all of them third-party figures from sourcing and forwarding sources dated 2026. On a first container that is real money spent on a document check rather than on an inspection of what is in the box.

What should the payment stages be tied to?

To events that leave evidence, not to calendar dates. On our side the deposit sits against the proforma invoice and the balance against the bill of lading copy, with the batch certificate of analysis and, on request, a vanning survey available before that balance moves. A stage tied to a date pays out whether or not the thing it was meant to pay for happened.

Does the order size change the answer?

It is the main thing that does, and the published thresholds are a band rather than a line: about 25,000 USD as the floor below which one source calls an LC disproportionate, and 50,000 USD and above as where that source and two others say LCs become standard. A first 20 ft container of coconut shell charcoal, derived from our own published tier grid and the measured payload of that container, sits between those two numbers.

What we hold, and what we do not

Certifications, registrations and the corrections we published against our own record.

Answered in full on Documents and registrations · that page last reviewed 29 August 2026

Do you have ISO 9001?

No. We hold no ISO certification of any kind. Every document we hold is listed on this page with its number and issuer — anything not listed here, we do not hold, regardless of where else you may have read it.

Is UN 1361 a certificate?

No — it is a UN classification number for shipping, not a quality certificate; see the dangerous-goods pages.

Putting your brand on it

Minimums per SKU, artwork, print lanes and what the branding actually adds to the price.

Answered in full on Private label and OEM · that page last reviewed 3 September 2026

What is the minimum order for private label?

1 × FCL (20 ft or 40 ft). Inside that container the minimum is two tonnes per SKU, and a SKU is a shape, a size and a packaging variant — not a logo. Two sizes of the same design are two SKUs, so a container of one design is straightforward and a container of six is arithmetic worth doing before you commission artwork.

Will the factory protect my brand?

An NDA is signed before any artwork changes hands, and our template has come back from external legal review. That is the part we control. The part that binds everyone who never signed anything is a trademark registration in your own market, held in your own name — and no Indonesian filing does that for you. We say what each instrument reaches and what none of them reaches, as practice rather than legal advice.

Who owns the artwork?

You do. You commission it or we design it free with an order, and either way it is your design on your brand. We hold the dielines and, after a first run, the plates — which is a production convenience that makes your reorders faster, not a claim on the artwork itself.

How long does a first branded container take?

Two clocks that overlap. Production is 15 working days (20 ft) · 20 working days (40 ft). Print is two weeks for a new design, ten working days for one printed before, and nothing at all for a house design taken from stock. Because they run together rather than in sequence, the honest answer is the longer of the two, and on a first order that is almost always the print.

Do you give territory exclusivity?

Not as a published term. Exclusivity is a commercial agreement rather than a feature of the programme, and a factory promising it on a first container is promising something it has no way to police. What is real is that your design is yours: we do not sell your box to anyone else, and the three designs we do sell openly are our own house brands, offered as such.

Ordering a container

Why the minimum is a full container, what that is in tonnes, and how to spread a first order across variants.

Answered in full on Why the minimum is one container · that page last reviewed 8 September 2026

Can I order less than a full container?

Not from us. Our minimum is one 20 ft container, with two tonnes per shape, size and packaging variant inside it. That is a commercial rule we set, not a regulation — and if a supplier tells you the law forbids part loads of charcoal, they are overstating it.

How many tonnes is one container?

It depends on the shape, because the cargo fills the box before it weighs it out. Cube 25 and 26 mm load 20 t in a 20 ft; cube 27 and 28 mm load 19.5 t; the hexagonal, stix, octagonal and flat/brix family loads 18.5 t. A 40 ft carries 26.5 t for all of them. No dome load has been measured, so we publish no figure for it.

Why do shipping lines not want part loads of charcoal?

Groupage means sharing a container with other shippers, which puts a dangerous-goods consignment into a consolidator's document chain and alongside cargo nobody has matched it against. Most consolidators decline that. It is a commercial reality rather than a prohibition, and it is why the market has converged on full containers for this cargo.

Can one container hold more than one product?

Yes, and it is usually the sensible first order. The two-tonne minimum is per variant, not per order, so a container can carry several cube sizes, shapes or packaging formats. Spreading a first order across three variants is a smaller bet than committing the whole load to one guess.

What can I do before committing to a container?

Take a free sample of 1–10 kg with the batch certificate for the material it came from, and test it yourself — burn it, weigh the ash, check it against the certificate. Freight is on you and there is no obligation. That answers the product question for the cost of a courier bill.

What it costs to make

Which cost lines have a public instrument you can open, which do not, and the one that decides the answer.

What does it cost to produce a tonne of coconut shell charcoal briquettes?

Nobody can answer that for a factory they do not run, and we publish no figure of our own. What can be answered is which lines the number is made of. Three have public instruments you can open yourself — a governor's decree for wages, a published tariff for electricity, a parliamentary budget-office study for raw material. The rest depend on how a particular plant runs, and the largest of them is published by nobody.

Which cost line matters most?

Material loss. Charcoal that goes into the mixer and does not leave as saleable briquettes is paid for twice — once as raw material and once as the production time spent on it — and it scales everything upstream of it. A change of a few points in loss moves the raw-material cost per finished tonne more than a change in the shell price itself. It is also the one figure no factory publishes and no study we could find measures at industrial scale.

How much is labour in Indonesia?

It is set district by district, not nationally. One West Java decree fixes 27 different monthly minimums for 2026, and they run from Rp 2,351,250 to Rp 5,999,443 — the top of the province is about 2.55 times the bottom, under one instrument, in one province. Our production site is in Kabupaten Bogor, which is Rp 5,161,769. And the decree binds only workers with under a year of service; beyond that the employer's own wage structure applies.

How much is industrial electricity in Indonesia?

For the quarter to September 2026, PLN's medium-voltage industrial band above 200 kVA is Rp 1,122 per kWh and the high-voltage band from 30,000 kVA is Rp 997. The more useful fact is the mechanism: the tariff is re-set every three months against the rupiah, the Indonesian crude price, inflation and the coal reference price, so a cost model built on one quarter's number has a three-month shelf life.

Why will a supplier not show me their cost breakdown?

Because it is their margin, stated backwards. That is an ordinary commercial reason rather than a suspicious one, and a supplier declining to give it is not a red flag. What you can reasonably ask for is the things a cost model needs in order to be checked at all: the incoterm, the grade as a measured band, the packaging, and the date the price was set.

Can I work out a supplier's margin from their quoted price?

Not reliably, and the attempt usually misleads. It would take their loss rate, their yield, their energy use per tonne and their overhead recovery — four numbers nobody publishes, and the first swings the answer more than the rest combined. A public cost model is good for the opposite direction: checking whether a quote is implausibly low for the region it claims to come from.

Buying it unbranded, or in bulk

Bulk drops the inner box; neutral drops only the printing. What each costs, and the figure we will not repeat.

Answered in full on Bulk and neutral packaging · that page last reviewed 8 September 2026

What is the difference between bulk and neutral packaging?

Bulk means no inner box: the briquettes go into an inner plastic liner and straight into the master carton. Neutral means an inner box with nothing printed on it — a plain white box from our stock. Bulk changes what is in the carton; neutral changes only what is printed on it.

How much cheaper is bulk?

On our price grid the boxed and bulk columns differ by a uniform 80 USD per tonne across all five grades, FOB Tanjung Priok, reviewed monthly. For comparison, one competitor puts the market figure at about 100 USD per tonne (littlebriquette.com, 17 January 2024). Ours is ours; theirs is theirs, and the two are close without being the same.

Does bulk fit more product in a container?

We do not publish a figure for that. The payloads we publish are measured for our standard packing, and no bulk load has been measured against them — so any "extra tonnes per container" number you see for bulk charcoal did not come from us.

Can I buy unbranded boxes and put my own label on them?

Yes. The plain unbranded box is held in stock, so there is no print run to wait for and no plate cost. A sticker on the side panel carrying your company name and contact details is the standard customisation on a house box; anything beyond that is a private-label print run.

Is bulk riskier for moisture?

The moisture barrier is the sealed inner liner with silica, and that is present in both bulk and boxed packing — so the barrier does not change. What changes is mechanical protection: an inner box is a second wall between the briquettes and the carton, and without it the pieces move against each other more in transit.

How it is made

The eight stages, the parameters we publish, what happens when a check fails, and which records exist but are not shown.

How is coconut shell charcoal actually made?

Mature coconut shell is carbonised, then the resulting charcoal is screened, ground to a powder, mixed with tapioca starch as a binder, extruded and cut to shape, dried, and packed. Eight stages on our own chain. Carbonization happens before the material reaches the briquetting factory gate; everything from screening onward is on the line at Gunung Sindur.

What temperature do you carbonise at?

590–750 °C, varying by stage — the run is a temperature profile rather than one set point, which is why we publish the range with that qualifier and nothing finer. A batch is 350 kg per carbonization oven and a full run takes 18–22 hours. Per-stage temperatures are not itemised on our side, and our kiln type is not published because it is not recorded on our data sheet.

Do you press or extrude the briquettes?

Extrude. The trade and most equipment vendors describe hydraulic pressing, and the two are different machines producing different density behaviour, so the distinction is worth keeping rather than smoothing over. Temperature, moisture, viscosity and density are recorded at extrusion, then viscosity, density and moisture again at forming.

What happens when a check fails during production?

The batch, or the failing part of it, is rejected and does not ship. We claim no re-drying-and-retest route, because we do not run one. That is stricter than the convention suppliers commonly describe, and the difference is worth naming plainly rather than boasting about.

Can I see records from an actual production run?

Not a published excerpt, no. Each batch has a file holding the laboratory certificate and the factory’s own results, and the batch code printed on every carton ties a delivery to its own file. But the drying log and the container loading log are not published and no sample page of either has been supplied, so this site shows none — a redacted-looking specimen would be an invention, on the one subject where that would refute the page carrying it. What is checkable today is the certificate for your batch, and a visit or a live video tour of the line.

Where the shells come from

Byproduct sourcing, what we can evidence about it today, and what we deliberately do not claim.

Answered in full on Sustainability, honestly · that page last reviewed 27 August 2026

Is coconut shell charcoal sustainable?

Part of that question has a solid answer. The shell is a byproduct of a harvest that happens for food and oil, so no tree is felled for the raw material — a structural difference from wood charcoal. What we cannot tell you is whether the product is low-impact: carbonization has a real cost, we hold no measurement of ours, and nobody has certified our chain. A defensible sourcing argument, and no verdict on the product.

Why won’t you just say your charcoal is eco-friendly?

Because we cannot substantiate it, and because from 27 September 2026 that class of wording is restricted in the EU unless it rests on recognised excellent environmental performance. A supplier who will say it today is a supplier whose claims your marketing would inherit.

What can you actually document per shipment?

A per-batch certificate of analysis, the batch number on the cartons tying a delivery to its own certificate, a retained sample held five years, a weathering certificate, a packing-day temperature record, the dangerous-goods declaration and safety data sheet, vanning survey photographs, a certificate of origin and ISPM 15 pallet marks. The traceability page takes each one in turn.

Can you provide plot-level geolocation for EU due diligence?

Not today. A region-level sourcing statement and plot-level geolocation are not available from us; our suppliers are expected to be able to provide them in future. No date attaches to that, because we do not have one. Batch-level traceability is documented and runs back to a production run, not to a plot of land.

Are you certified sustainable?

No — and saying so plainly beats letting a page of green wording imply otherwise. Our certifications page sets out what is held, what is not, and where each can be checked.

Two subjects this index does not cover, and where they live

There is no shipping group and no import group here, and the reason is worth stating rather than hiding: no page in either of those sections publishes a question-and-answer set for this index to gather. Both are covered in depth — they are the two largest parts of this site — but as reference pages rather than as questions. Rather than write new answers on this page, which would make it an author instead of an index, they are routed:

Each answer carries the currency of the page it comes from, shown above its group. This index is regenerated from those pages on every build, so an answer corrected there is corrected here.

Something here does not answer it

Ask the export desk directly. A question that arrives twice usually ends up as an answer on the page that should have carried it, which is how most of the ones above got written.
